How It All Started

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration has been an organization of the United States government since October 1st, 1958. NASA’s job originated in the field of national security developing weapons and attempting to beat Russia in the the space race. In 1961 President John F. Kennedy announced “I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to Earth”, this sent NASA into top gear to put a man on the Moon and demonstrate their scientific and engineering superiority. In 1969 the Apollo 11 mission successfully landed Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the Moon which led to 5 more missions that directly followed.
